Playlists for These Girls Can Play
By: Dr. Paco Jones

What follows is a listing of the ten scripted shows the girls played during
their six year run. Yes. They played many more mixes of music, but these
are the 10 that they scripted when they first started. The author has
compiled mixes of each show, done by their original artists. They were done
in Mixmeister Pro, but are not commercially available. The author owns a
copy of each piece of music the girls used which he ripped to MP3 format
for the mixing software.

Please, if you decide to do the mixes for yourself, honor the copyrights on
the materials that each of the artists worked very hard to present for
your entertainment.

Prologue:

If you read These Girls Can Play and wondered what kind of music the
girls actually played, this Story is the playlist for the ten scripted shows.

The author put together mixes of all the music which in total came to 22.2
hours of music. Step one is rip your CD's to MP3 format. Once again,
please don't steal music!!!! The performers went through a lot of work to
provide entertainment for you, so you need to pay them for their labor.
Ain't no free lunch!!! Please honor the Intellectual Property Rights of the
artists.

Chapter 1 Mixmeister Pro method

I did the mixes two different ways, the easiest being in a program called
Mixmeister Pro. I found this program many years ago while he was a disk
jockey. It's one of the best mixing programs (for the price) on the market.
If you get/have/use the Mixmeister Pro program, it's well documented and
pretty straight forward.

Basically, load the program, double click to open, import your music library,
select each track and slide it to the right hand panel which is the Playlist
panel. Once you've done each set, save it, and repeat until you've done all
40. Thirty sets, and ten encores (the encores are pretty redundant
because as the story says, the girls only changed the first song in the
encore, the other three songs were done at every show.) The downside to
the Mixmeister solution is that the mixes you create won't work on an MP3
player, unless there is some way to load Mixmeister Pro on the player!

Chapter 2 Why do it the hard way!

The second method is much more complex. The author made these mixes
because the iPod won't really mix music and he hates the Space between
the tracks that the iPod has because each file is played separately.

Ironically, the function to do mixing is on the chip (Integrated Circuit)
Apple uses in the iPod, they've just chosen not to enable that function. Too
bad really, other than that, it's a pretty fair device for playing music.

Instead of telling you what the iPod won't do, let's make it do the job
some other way. As a brief synopsis what the author did was combine the
songs for a set into one file using a DOS command (remember DOS?). When
they're in the one file, he used a Free audio editing program called
Audacity (Please donate if you decide to use it it's only fair, and will
ensure the programmers will come up with other products... google on
Audacity). In audacity is a spectrum display. If you magnify that display
you will see each tune in the file. You only need to select the dead space
and delete it.

The downside of the combined file procedure is that it is one large file.
When you play it on most MP3 players you can't scroll back to an individual
track. If you punch the back button, it goes all the way back to the
beginning of that set.

The author puts the MP3 files on the iPod in both formats, as the
shows/sets and single tracks. Takes a lot of memory, but isn't that what
it's for?

Chapter 3 DOS/Audacity -- Pretty Much For geeks only!

Ok, here's a more detailed procedure for the Audacity solution.
This procedure is complex and pretty much for geeks. If you are unfamiliar
with using the DOS window (cmd window) and/or DOS commands you may
want to find a different way to accomplish all of this. I've been a geek
since long before geek was cool, and it took me some time to figure this all
out!!! It's not for the faint of heart, but if you follow what's below it
should lead you in the right direction.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Assumes you've ripped your CD's to MP3 format.
1. Create a folder to put the TGCP shows in (call it TGCP?)
2. In the above folder, create a folder for the shows (call them Show 1,
Show 2...)
3. In each of the folders created for shows, create a folder for for each
set (Name Show#Set#). Make one for each show and set plus an encore.
4. Copy the MP3 files from your ripped location to the appropriate
Show#Set# folder.
5. Once all the files are in the appropriate folders,** rename all the songs
in each folder to a number dot MP3. It makes things a lot easier when you
use the DOS copy command. So The Feeling Begins.MP3 would become
1.mp3;Helplessly Hoping.MP3 would become 2.mp3 and so on until all the
songs are numbers.

**HINT: In each folder do a Select All from the edit drop down and do a
copy and paste into the same directory. That will create a file called copy
of Helplessly Hoping.mp3" for each of the music files. It makes it much
easier to keep track of the real names of the files rename the
Copyofxxxx as in step 5 above.

6. Run the cmd program. In windows XP you select Start (lower left)
and click on run. It will bring up what's called a terminal window. History
that's what the whole screen used to look like before Windows!!! If you
want to execute a program, you have to type in the whole name...don't
make a mistake or you'll get an error message that says Syntax
error...won't tell you what's wrong so you'll have to figure it out!!
7. Once the terminal window is up (the new black box somewhere on your
windows screen), change the directory (that's what folders used to be
called) back using the "cd.." command, until it is at C:\. Then type in the
path to the directories/folders where you put the music files and renamed
them. Example:
cd.. cd.. cd C:\Music\TGCP\Shows\Show 1\Show1Set1
that will put you into the folder with the above name. After you use the
copy command, below, you'll have to do a cd.. once to get back to the
show/set folder. Once you're done with Show 1 you will have to do a cd..
twice to get back to Shows. Then you change the path to Show
2\Show2Set1

8. You'll now use the copy command to combine all the files into one big file
using the following syntax now this syntax is for Windows XP Pro SP3, so
if you have something else, you may have to experiment. For instance, when
I was trying to figure out the syntax to do this step I found that I had to
put in a + sign in between each file name instead of a comma, or a space
or....Be sure to put in the "/b" after copy or it may not copy it
correctly...if memory serves me it tells copy to do the copy in binary.

The syntax will look like this:
copy /b 1.mp3+2.mp3+3.mp3+4.mp3+#.mp3 Show1Set1.mp3

When you've done that command there will be a message that will tell you
what was copied. Make sure all the numbers you typed in have been copied
and there's not one out of sequence (like you put in a space or misspelled
the file name) - it happens. I do it to myself all the time then wonder
where that song is when I go into Audacity to edit.
If there is, go to the folder that you saved the "Show1Set1.mp3" file in
and delete it. Then do the copy command again, only this time be more
careful! Can't tell you how many times I cuss myself for not looking at the
"What was copied" list.
Now you see why the files are named with numbers...if you don't do that
each song title dot MP3 will have to be typed in, and don't mess up any
spelling!!! The line will automatically wrap, so just keep typing when you get
to the right edge of the cmd window.
In the above example
Do this step for each Show#Set#

9. Now each of the Show#Set# directories/folders has a file in it called
Show#Set# along with the original files (don't forget the encore's) and the
renamed files (once you've combined and have a master you can go back
and delete all of the music files, named and numbered. If you delete them
from that directory, it will free up that much disk space (The whole thing,
all files, all combined, and all masters total 1.25GB).

10. download, install and open Audacity.

11. Open the first file Show1Set1 in Audacity.

12 After a short time youll see in the Audacity window a spectrum view of
the combined files. Use the magnifying glass + to make the display of the
spectrum a size that you can see the straight line dead space between
the first and second song.

13. You can use the magnifying glass more to make the dead space even
more visible. Play each song and watch where the song really ends and the
next one begins. That flat line between the end and the beginning is the
dead space you hear between songs. Select it, and delete it. Then do that
for each song in that mix. Don't be fooled by tunes that have "stops" in
them...they'll be a straigt line too...make sure you're at the end of one
song and the beginning of another before you do your delete...there is an
undo selection, so if you mess up, just undo and do it again.
Repeat for each set in all the shows and the encore. I always name them
with master tagged on so that I know it's gone through Audacity. Example:
Show1Set1 master.mp3.
Once you've gone through every show and every set you have mixes of the
sets the girls played on tour. Their last show hasn't been listed yet.
You can save yourself some time and disk space by not putting the Beach
Boys Medley in each show as it's listed. It's redundant. I put them in
because 1. I like Beach Boys music (I'm a beach bum child of the
60's....explains a lot doesn't it?); 2. I made a complete set as listed it's
my story, so I wanted it to be totally complete. Besides, I love the girls!!

If you do make mixes, please enjoy!!! The girls played the music exactly as
you hear it. The only thing that would be different in their shows is the
vocals. Bob couldn't do all the male parts and still be able to talk, so the
girls did those where appropriate.

REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT.....

Please, Please, Please -- Honor Intelectual Property Rights. The music isn't
all that expensive, so just buy the stuff. Now you can even get individual
tunes so you don't have a CD collection like mine of over 1000 CD's!!!! Yes.
I bought license to all the music listed here and ripped it myself - with the
exception of 2 which I got as freebie's at Amazon.com when I ordered
some more CD's (they were supposed to be a buck...wow how generous).
And yes, in 1000 CD's there is a lot of crap!!! I think record companies and
artists should be ashamed of themselves for releasing some of the absolute
shit they put out. I can't tell you how many one tune albums I have. Bought
the record for the one tune. But now "we" have the option of only buying
that one tune!!!
I'm just one of those people who loves music!!!!

Epilogue:

I know. I keep repeating this. There is a good reason for that!!!! Maybe,
just maybe it may deter someone from stealing the music from somewhere.
If repeating prevents one person from doing the wrong thing, then this has
been successful!

Please, if you decide to do the mixes for yourself, honor the copyrights on
the materials that each of the artists worked very hard to present.

These links aren't guaranteed to work, however to get the feel for the

idea of how hard Maryanne worked to master the doudouk.
